John Metcalfe is our special guest this weekend

This Saturday at Ginglik, come down and experience some amazing music, hosted by our good selves…

Saturday 9th Feb 2008

FULL MEMBERS FREE / PAYG MEMBERS & GUESTS 5 POUNDS AFTER 8PM / 7PM – 2AM / NO ENTRY AFTER 12.30AM
at Ginglik, 1 Shepherds Bush Green W12 8PH
(yes we know the central line station is closed but there’s a free bus from white city, or you could wander down from holland park. there’s always the hammersmith & city line. alternatively, there’s loads of local buses!)

“John Metcalfe’s strings and electronics are impeccable” (The Guardian)

A chance to hear ex-Durutti Columnist John Metcalfe and the Bays’ drumming legend Andy Gangadeen performing Metcalfe’s music in a rare London appearance. They will be joined by The Bays’ sonic genius Simon Richmond and the leader of the world renowned Duke Quartet, Louisa Fuller.

Metcalfe’s music dissolves boundaries between electronic and modern classical styles demonstrating the best in deep and inspiring instrumentalism. With influence from Bach to Eno via Schoenberg and Kraftwerk, Metcalfe’s sound world is beguiling and hugely powerful. Pieces range in scope from electric intimacy and lush cinematica to searing orchestral drum’n’bass.

“… crossing all manner of boundaries. Melding avant-pop and electronica, film music and contemporary classical…a set of highly melodic, sonically compelling songs without words…the ideal item for classical fans wanting to investigate a pop-leaning, contemporary sound world or for electronica fans who crave far more musicality than they’re used to getting” (Billboard)

Hearing the music live is an intense experience. The level of musicianship and technical skill is second to none. Audiences are simply blown away by the visceral focus and variety of emotion on offer. More often than not a set from the band provokes descriptions of “absolutely jaw-dropping”, “brilliant” and “awesome” on website forums. The press too. Of a recent show The Guardian stated, “The event starts brilliantly with viola player/composer John Metcalfe. They play a smartly written, sharply defined repertoire (as demonstrated by Metcalfe’s album Scorching Bay), but Gangadeen’s supercharged style reveals an extra dimension in Metcalfe’s material; the drums sit right on top of the beat, synchronising precisely with the urgent attack of the strings.”

plus support from:

Ebbs & Flows….
Ebbs and Flows is a musician / producer from a combination of northwest London and the rural confusion of the West Country. Dark droning loops are employed to create multi layered hooks that build and grow until they have morphed into fractured krautrock maelstroms, combining distorted and warped textures, mixed with hard (occasionally nasty) basslines and beats. Both sparse and sonically dense, you will find yourself hypnotised in calm pastoral fields, only to wake up in the middle of a squat party.

Kone-R
“…a dexterity few DJ’s can harness”
(One Week To Live)

Kone-R is the man behind the Uncharted Audio record label, which has introduced the likes of Cursor Miner, LJ Kruzer, Kings Have Long Arms and plenty of other weird and wonderful sonic tomfoolery to the world. Manning the turntables since 1992 when he discovered the joy of warehouse raves, the spirit of that era lives on in his sets today, with a liberal sprinkling of ambience, techno, breakbeats and plenty of low frequency oscillations. Despite the length of time he’s spent in the booth, he maintains a cutting edge – you’re as likely to hear him drop fresh dub plates by up and coming acts alongside the latest cuts from Berlin to Detroit as you are to hear vintage rave, classic disco and timeless electro. What’s more, every Kone-R set is expertly mixed entirely on vinyl to preserve audio and artistic integrity – just like in the good old days.

LOST IDOL
ALED JONES vs KONE-R
DIAGORO

FULL MEMBERS FREE / PAYGO MEMBERS 5 AFTER 8PM / 7PM-2AM / NO ENTRY AFTER 12.30AM

Every Saturday for 5 years Ginglik has brought you the tastiest electronic beats and visuals on the scene. the venue suffered some bad flooding last week – please come down and help us get back to normal with a few drinks and a boogie!

LOST IDOL (Cookshop, Brighton)
The Lost Idol live experience is ready to go!
Utilizing laptop/fx/decks/synths/vocals/guitars it makes for a great live performance.
“Lost Idol has an intuitive knowledge of the alchemical formulae that produce potent 21st century psychedelia” – Mojo
“Beck remixed by DJ Shadow” – IDJ

ALED JONES vs KONE-R
Anglesey-raised but resident in Nottingham over the last decade, Aled Jones has become synonymous with electronic music within the city – he’s got a doctorate so he’s bound to be a bit geeky innit. Doesn’t seem to hinder him supporting the likes of Kode 9, Plaid, DMZ and DJ Food, when on their travels oop North. He has less time to play out these days so its even more special to have him down here in London for a very special one-off, effortlessly dropping cosmic electro, dubwise techno and slammin’ dubstep bombs alongside Uncharted Audio gruppenfuhrer Kone-R.

DIAGORO
Diagoro is one of the alter egos of Sam Ashwell, who also records under the name Abstrakt Knights and Colony Dj’s with Mike Wallis, who he also runs colony productions with. As well as releasing on Colony and Touchin Bass, Sam has also had releases on Erratica and Halflife (as Abstrakt Knights). A lot can be expected from Sam and Mike and the Colony camp in ’07 with Sam’s debut album ready for release, a new Ak 12, a Drum and Bass side project as well as a whole bunch of new releases and new artists planned for Colony.

LJ Kruzer plays live at this year’s big chill festival

uncharted audio are delighted to announce that after cursor miner’s triumphant display at this year’s sonar festival in barcelona, lj kruzer will be appearing live at one of the uk’s biggest festivals, the big chill. Catch LJ on Sunday evening on the Sanctuary stage.
here’s the full info:

The Big Chill
Eastnor Castle Deer Park
3rd – 5th August, 2007

“It’s hard to imagine a more perfect event” The Times
“Everyone has a good time. And I mean everyone” iDJ Magazine

The festival season is well and truly upon us again, and as always The Big Chill boasts an impressive array of DJ performances, including an exclusive 4 hour session from the masters of downbeat, Kruder & Dorfmeister, electro-funk rebel Greg Wilson, celebrated producer Ashley Beedle, and the man who always packs the sunshine in his record box, Norman Jay MBE. Live sets come from UK funk maestros Cymande, ska pioneers The Skatalites, Gilles Peterson’s man of the moment Ben Westbeech, and the artist formerly known as Chef, soul legend Isaac Hayes. And if it all gets too much, why not call in for a nice refreshing cuppa at Mr Scruff’s Tea Tent?

As you may know, there is so much more to the Big Chill than music… arts, comedy, randomness, Big Chill Radio, gourmet food, fancy camping, not-as-fancy camping depending on your own taste, fancy dress (optional and with no general direction so do whatever you want!), portaloos, showers, chilling, clubbing, Amnesty’s Speaker’s Corner, ceilidh, body & soul and lots of trees.

Celebrating the spirit of pirate radio, there will be a welcome-to-the Big Chill sunset session by the lake near Big Chill Radio on the Thursday evening and further sunrise sessions during the event. Walker & Bromwich’s yatch “The Celeste” is covered in 50,000 mirror tiles, moored on the lake where they will create new sound and light waves to the soundtrack of Big Chill Radio, so don’t forget to bring your radio.

Ever get the feeling you’re watching the grass grow? You will this year, courtesy of Ackroyd & Harvey as they create a complex image using seedling grass by the main stage. The work will have the same life-cycle as the festival itself so we’re not telling you what the image will be yet as it will unravel and expose itself from yellow to greens.

Other art installations, scattered around site for you to find are Blakeborough’s Charles Zimmerman inspired flying platform controlled by body movements, Donkor’s full sized FT Mud Hut constructed from local materials and wallpapered with Financial Times newspapers, Semiconductor’s experimental film with animation, and Cooper & Coates’ living photo booth wandering the festival site. To mention a few.

This year’s festival launches a brand-spanking new all-singing (well, Punk Rock Karaoke, that is) and all-dancing comedy cabaret tent featuring anything from the sublime to the ridiculous… it’s BIG CHILL NIGHTS, with everything and anything from Bethnal Green’s Working Men’s Club to ‘Danza Antigua’ – an immersive theatre experience from Scarabeus with spectacular aerial performances, a Halloween short film selection, John Hegley, Sean Hughes and a lot more.
